My set up is pretty simple a Macbook Pro (USB-C ports only), a couple of powered Genelec speakers and headphones (which I need to upgrade as well, but I'll leave that for another time).Ĭurrently I just need to do critical listening, in ProTools mostly, for some light mixing/mastering as well as audio editing. I've now updated to Mac OS Catalina and the Mbox Pro is obsolete (Avid won't update the drivers), so I need a new audio interface, or possibly just a DAC. I've been doing music production for a while, using ProTools and an Mbox Pro 3. New to this site/forums and amazed by the knowledge and helpfulness of the community. Still, I'm very tempted.Īnyway, I appreciate it if you've made it this far.I'm trying to replace my audio interface and as I fell into the rabbit hole of internet research I ended up here. My dream unit would be a Lynx Hilo with the TB3 card but a used unit is still twice my initial budget.

Monolith Desktop Balanced Headphone Amplifier I was also playing with the idea of getting something like this, which I've heard great things about : Would you agree? Anything else I should consider? even though I feel a good chunk of that money is going towards the mic pres and whatnot. This is mainly based on what I've read about its converters and its integration with Macs.

I've been looking at different units and it seems like the Apogee Element 24 may be the best option (adding the Control remote unit). So having a headphone out on the front and a nice volume control on the unit would be ideal (even better if the headphones have a dedicated volume control like on the Mbox Pro, but not a biggie). Most of my listening is thru powered speakers, but I do also switch to headphones from time to time. I already have all the plug ins I need (say what?! haha), so the UADs plugin ecosystem is not a factor. My current workflow involves a lot of critical listening (using ProTools, but also in Adobe Premiere, iTunes, AmadeusPro, Quicktime.) as well as some mastering and light mixing in ProTools. If I have 1-2 mic pres and a couple of extra inputs, great, but those features will be at the very bottom of the decision making process.

nor it's something I really want to pay for. This is all to say that I'm not concerned with the quality of the mic pres nor the number of inputs. I also still have a couple of synths hooked up to it, but haven't really used them much lately, either. When I first got the Mbox Pro I used to do some recording, so the mic pres came in handy, but that's not really the case anymore. I only work on ProTools and my main focus is to get the best sound/converter quality for around $1000. I need to replace an Mbox Pro 3 with a new interface that will work seamlessly on Mac OS Catalina, ideally over USB-C/TB3.
